Importance Of An Email List

For artists one of the main things we recommend to help in really all aspects of their career is building an email list. A lot of people think this is no longer needed with social media being on the rise, but we feel that it is still a crucial step to take as an artist. So today we will be going over the importance of an email list for artists.

Limitations Of Social Media

When it comes to social media a lot of artists think they are better of going this route instead of an email list. We think that all artists should use both! After all, one of the main social media sites (instagram) does not allow users to post links (If the artist has 10K followers then they can but a lot of aritsts have not reached that yet so they are limited on what exactly they can post). Also, if for whatever reason you lose your social media page you will have lost a lot of contact with your fans.

You also never know how many of your fans are going to see your posts. After all a lot of Instagrams and Facebooks algorithms have changed to where only about 7-9% of your fans are seeing your posts. Unless of course your post goes viral but that is very rare to happen. So this causes a lot of uncertainty on whether or not you are getting your message across to your fans or not.

The Conversion Rate

If you have an email list you are able to send direct links to your fans. So if you have an upcoming show you can let them know exactly where they can purchase tickets at. Or if you are selling some merch to help promote you as an artist you can add an image of the merch and then a direct link to your online merch store.

When it comes to email campaigns they just have huge conversation rate which will help you as an artist get your message across to your fans in a successful way. As Neil Patel (CO-Founder of Kissmetics) said:

Out of all the channels I tested as a marketer, email continually outperforms most of them.

-Neil Patel

Another example would be from the marketing manager over at Unbounce. He says that 80-90% of his web traffic comes from his emails that he sends to customers.

Getting To Know Your Fans Through Email

A lot of times you can be restricted at getting to know your fans on social apps. They can be less personal than emailing can be. One of the reasons for that is because of the restrictions. Some social sits only give you a certain amount of characters to post, or a certain number of photos/images to post. Where as over email you can write out exactly what you want to say and add as many images or links as you want to.

As Nathalie Lussier from AccessAlly says:

Building an email list is crucial because it’s the best way to build a relationship with potential customers in an intimate way. You’re not just a status update that’s there and gone; you’re right in someone’s inbox

-Nathalie Lussier

If you make a post on social media the fan would have to be checking their feed within a couple days or they might miss your post. Where as when you email someone that email waits in their inbox until they read it. They are also able to search for emails if they missed an important one. Without a search feature on social sites they would have to dig through the artists feed in order to find what they are looking for.

If there is one thing that experts agree on it is that building an email list is vital. Don’t miss out on this crucial step in your marketing journey as an artist. They are easy to setup and lets face it, most fans enjoy being ‘in the loop’ with their artists.
