How the ‘Rule of 7’ Affects Your Show Promotion

The Rule Of Seven

Have you heard of something called “The Rule of Seven”. Today we will be going over just what that is and how it can help with Music Marketing.

Many years ago move studio bosses asked themselves the question “How many times they needed to promote their movie before someone went to see it”. After some time they came to the conclusion that it took potential fans seeing seven different advertisements in order for them to buy a ticket to see their film.

How It Relates

You the artist are able to take this same marketing rule and use it as a tool to help get your word out about your music, brand or your upcoming show. In some cases it may only take a fan listening to one song of yours for them to become a fan. However it may take a few more instances for that fan to take it a step further and buy a ticket for your show, buy some of your merch or even to purchase one of your songs. In the current times of COVID when fans are very strapped for cash this is especially true.

Using This As Promotion

There are many ways that you would be able to use the rule of seven to your advantage. You might not have the ability to come up with 7 different advertising campaigns but at least knowing this info the more you can come up with the better!

  1. Dont just make one post advertising your show and call it good. Make sure to post about your show and then follow up with your fans about the show.
  2. Switch up how you reach out to your fans. You could do a regular social post, then a story then even a direct message regarding your show. That is three different ways right of the bat to get your show out there.
  3. Try to go old school with your advertising. In a time when people are trying to shop more local (to help local business’) they might be more prone to seeing a Flyer advertising an artist or a show and take action that way.
  4. Ask for help! You might only be able to come up with a few different ways to promote your show but you can always ask for help from a family or friend to help promote the show as they will surely have a different worded message than you.
  5. Make sure to use different social media sites. A lot of info out there shows that different types of people use different social media websites. So if you are only using Instagram make sure to switch it up and start using Facebook, Twitter or even YouTube as well to switch things up!
